How Do You Use AI to Write Product Descriptions from Specs?

Write AI product descriptions from approved specs: map buyer questions, leave missing details unresolved, and verify every claim before publishing.

Use AI to write product descriptions by supplying approved specifications, listing the buyer’s questions, and instructing it to draft only from that material. Require the AI to leave missing details unresolved, then check every product claim against the source before publishing. The goal is clearer language—not new features, benefits, or promises.

Source-only drafting means writing from a defined set of approved facts while leaving unsupported details out of the copy. Treat it as a working rule for both the AI and the person reviewing its output.

For product descriptions, separate permission to rewrite from permission to make claims. Ask the AI to improve organization and readability without expanding what the source actually says.

What should you give the AI before it writes?

Prepare a compact source packet for the exact product and variant. Use information your business has approved, rather than asking the AI to fill gaps from general product knowledge.

Include these fields where available:

  • Product name and variant.
  • Materials, dimensions, capacity, and weight.
  • Included components.
  • Approved care and use instructions.
  • Confirmed compatibility or limitations.
  • Approved claims and their supporting documentation.
  • Missing information and unresolved conflicts.

Label each source fact so a reviewer can trace the draft back to it. Record the source document and approval date separately for your own records.

Keep style examples outside the fact packet. A previous description can demonstrate your preferred tone, but do not authorize the AI to borrow its product claims.

For a reusable briefing structure, see what to include in AI marketing prompts.

How do you turn buyer questions into a drafting plan?

Before requesting prose, list the questions the description should address. Start with actual support questions or sales inquiries when available. Otherwise, label your proposed questions as editorial assumptions, not customer research.

Use this sequence:

  1. Identify the question a shopper needs answered.
  2. Match it to an approved fact.
  3. Mark the answer as supported, partially supported, or unknown.
  4. Draft only the supported portion.
  5. Send unanswered questions to the appropriate person for confirmation.

For example, a shopper might ask whether a container is easy to clean. If the approved source only says “hand wash only,” use that instruction. Do not replace it with “effortless cleaning.”

Ask the AI to produce the question-to-source mapping before the description. Review the proposed answers while they are still separate from persuasive prose.

What does a source-only example look like?

Hypothetical approved specifications

The following lunch-container example is entirely fictional and illustrates the workflow. It is not a real product or a recommendation.

Source label Approved fact
Material Stainless steel container body
Capacity Capacity: 900 mL
Closure Clip-on lid
Layout Removable divider
Care Hand wash only
Contents Container, lid, and divider included

For this exercise, assume the source packet does not confirm leak resistance, microwave suitability, dishwasher suitability, insulation, or food-contact certifications.

Buyer questions and permitted answers

  • What is it made from? Describe the container body as stainless steel; do not extend that material claim to the lid.
  • How much does it hold? State the supplied capacity without estimating servings.
  • Can I remove the divider? Say the divider is removable.
  • How should I clean it? Retain “hand wash only.”
  • Will it leak in my bag? Leave the answer unresolved and request confirmation.

Hypothetical source-only draft

Stainless Steel Lunch Container with Removable Divider

This lunch container has a stainless steel body, a 900 mL capacity, and a clip-on lid. Remove the divider when you prefer an undivided interior, or leave it in place. The container, lid, and divider are included. Hand wash only.

The divider sentence translates the supplied feature into an understandable action. It does not promise that compartments are sealed or that sauces will stay separated.

Avoid an embellished alternative such as “A leakproof, dishwasher-safe lunch solution that keeps meals fresh all day.” None of those promises is approved in this hypothetical packet.

What prompt should you use?

Try this template after replacing the bracketed sections:

Write an ecommerce product description using only the approved facts below.

APPROVED FACTS
[Paste labeled specifications for this exact product and variant.]

BUYER QUESTIONS
[Paste the questions the description should address.]

KNOWN GAPS OR CONFLICTS
[List missing details and contradictory source statements.]

STYLE
Use plain language, short paragraphs, and a practical tone.

RULES
- Treat the approved facts as the only source of product claims.
- Do not browse, infer missing specifications, or borrow facts from similar products.
- Do not add performance, safety, compatibility, sustainability, or durability claims.
- Preserve measurements, units, care instructions, and limitations.
- Explain features without promising unsupported outcomes.
- Do not turn unknown information into a positive or negative claim.
- If sources conflict, leave that detail unresolved.

RETURN
- A buyer-question map showing supported answers and unknowns.
- A product title, short description, and feature bullets.
- A claim-to-source checklist using the supplied labels.
- An internal list of questions requiring confirmation.

Keep internal notes and unresolved placeholders out of customer-facing copy.

If you need a different tone, change the style instructions—not the evidence boundary. The guide to keeping AI-written copy in your brand voice can serve as a separate style-planning resource.

How do you distinguish useful explanations from invented benefits?

Use this editorial test: Does the new wording explain the supplied fact, or does it require additional evidence?

For the fictional container, “removable divider” supports telling the reader they can remove the divider. It does not authorize promises about portion control, easier weight management, or preventing food from mixing.

Treat words such as “premium,” “heavy-duty,” “safe,” “eco-friendly,” and “guaranteed” as review triggers. Ask what evidence would justify the exact wording rather than accepting it as harmless marketing language.

The FTC’s truth-in-advertising guidance states that advertising claims must be truthful, not deceptive or unfair, and evidence-based. Keep your review focused on both explicit statements and the impression the description creates.

For search-facing copy, answer the buyer’s question instead of padding the description with repeated keywords. Google’s guidance on helpful, reliable, people-first content emphasizes creating content primarily to help people rather than manipulate search rankings.

What should you check before publishing?

Compare the draft directly with the approved packet. Use the AI’s claim checklist as a review aid, not as independent verification.

Check that:

  • Every product statement maps to a source fact.
  • Measurements and units match exactly.
  • Variant details have not been mixed together.
  • Limitations and care instructions remain visible.
  • Titles and bullets follow the same evidence rules as paragraphs.
  • Unanswered questions remain in the internal handoff.
  • No placeholders or source labels appear in the published copy.

For unresolved safety or essential-use questions, pause publication and ask the responsible product contact. Do not silently interpret missing information as approval.

Use this AI-written content review guide when planning your broader editorial check.

After approval, save the source packet, prompt, and final copy together. When specifications change, review the description against the revised packet rather than asking the AI to update it from memory.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions readers ask most

Can AI write a product description from an incomplete specification sheet?

Use AI to draft only the supported portions of an incomplete specification sheet. Require a separate list of unanswered questions, and do not allow the model to infer missing materials, compatibility, or performance. If an unresolved detail affects safe use or a central purchase decision, pause publication until the responsible product contact confirms it.

Should you let AI research missing product specifications online?

Keep research separate from source-only drafting. If you research a missing detail, verify that it applies to the exact product and variant, then obtain approval before adding it to the source packet. Do not let the drafting stage automatically treat search results, competitor descriptions, or information about similar products as approved evidence.

How can you make a specification-based description persuasive without inventing benefits?

Make the description useful through clear organization, precise language, and direct answers to buyer questions. Explain what a confirmed feature allows the shopper to do without attaching unverified outcomes. For example, in the fictional container example, describe removing the divider rather than promising healthier eating, better portion control, or leakproof separation.

What should you do when approved product documents disagree?

Mark the conflicting detail as unresolved and ask the responsible product contact which source should govern the description. Do not ask AI to choose the more plausible answer or combine contradictory values. Update the approved packet with the confirmed information, then regenerate or revise only the affected copy and review it again.

Can you use the same AI prompt across an entire product catalog?

Reuse the workflow and prompt structure, but provide a separate approved fact packet for each product and variant. Keep product identifiers attached throughout drafting and review. Test the process on a manageable group before expanding it, and check each description for copied attributes, missing limitations, unsupported claims, and unresolved internal notes.
